Collections Overview

U.S. Federal Government Publications

The UC Davis Library is a selective Federal Depository Library since 1953, with an excellent historical collection. We receive print, electronic, and microform government publications and maps distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program of the Government Printing Office. The collection includes congressional and regulatory information, statistical reports and data, technical reports, and a wide variety of interdisciplinary publications on all subjects.

California and Local

We are also a depository for government information from the State of California and the City of Davis. We collect materials from selected local jurisdictions, including Yolo County and nearby Councils of Governments.

Foreign and International

The Library acquires material extensively from major international, intergovernmental organizations including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank, and the Food and Agriculture Organization. The Asian Development Bank deposits all of its publications with us.

The Library collects on a very limited basis from foreign governments.

Current Periodicals and Newspapers

The Government Information and Maps Department maintains the current periodicals collection (Call numbers A-P and U-Z) in the Lower Level of Shields Library. This collection consists of the unbound issues only. Department staff help with locating periodical issues; reference desks throughout the library assist in locating print and electronic journal literature by subject.

The print and microform Newspaper Collection is also located in the Lower Level. The UC Davis Shields Library maintains collections of daily print newspapers from the local region, major California newspapers, major national newspapers and a small number of foreign newspapers. We retain microfilm archives of many of these newspapers. Via electronic subscriptions, we also have access to the full text, with full-text searching, of hundreds of other newspapers.

The UC Davis Library's extensive Microforms Collection is located in the Lower Level of Shields Library. The microforms collection includes a significant portion of the library's UC Davis Theses and Dissertations collection as well as a large collection of technical report literature.
