EndNote v. 6 - Step by Step Guided Tour
Part 1: Introduction to an EndNote Library
- Open a new library
- From the File menu, click New
- New Reference Library File Name: Tutorial.enl
- Click Save
Part 2: Changing EndNote Preferences
- Set a default library
- Open the Tutorial library
- From the Edit menu, click Preferences
- Highlight Libraries
- Click Add Open Libraries
- Click Apply
- Click OK
Part 3: Searching PubMed from within EndNote
- Connect to PubMed from within EndNote
- Open the Tutorial Library
- From the Tools menu, click the Connect submenu, then Connect
- Highlight PubMed (NLM)
- Click Connect
- Search PubMed, then Copy to EndNote Library
- Enter Living Donors as the first search term
- Click AND
- Enter Kidney Transplantation as the second search term
- Click Add Field
- Enter Altruism as the third search term
- Click Search
- Click OK
- Click Copy All References to: Tutorial.enl
Part 4: Importing References into EndNote
- Search PubMed, Save text file, then Import to EndNote
- Search PubMed
- Enter Kidney Transplantation/ethics in the Search box
- Click Go
- Change Display from Summary to MEDLINE
- Click Display
- Click Send To Text
- From the File menu, Save As ethics.txt
- Click Save
- Switch to EndNote
- Import PubMed records
- From the File menu, click Import
- Import Data File: ethics.txt
- Import Option: Other Filters, then PubMed (NLM)
- Discard Duplicates
- No Translation
- Click Import
- Search PubMed
- Search CAB Abstracts, Save text file, then Import to EndNote
- Search CAB Abstracts
- Enter euthanasia and ethics in the Search box
- Click Start Search
- Click Save
- Which records do you want to save? All records in the current search
- Which fields? All fields
- Include: Record number and database name
- Include: Field labels: Short labels
- Click Save Records
- Save file as euthanasia.txt
- Click Close
- Switch to EndNote
- Import CAB Abstracts records
- From the File menu, Click Import
- Import Data File: euthanasia.txt
- Import Option: CAB Abstracts (SP)
- Discard Duplicates
- No Translation
- Click Import
- Search CAB Abstracts
- Search Web of Science, then Import Directly
- Search Web of Science
- Click Easy Search
- Check Science Citation Index Expanded
- Click Topic
- Enter animal AND emotions in the Search box
- Click Search
- Click Mark All
- Click Marked List
- Fields to include: Author, Title, Source, Keywords, Abstract
- Click on Export to Reference Software
- Export to: EndNote
- File name: Tutorial.enl
- Search Biosis, then Import Directly
- Search Biosis
- Enter multiple sclerosis and botulinum toxin in the Search Box
- Click Perform Search
- Click Display
- Click Citation Manager
- Click All in this set (1-25)
- Click Complete Reference
- Click Direct Export
- Click Save
- Open EndNote
- Open Tutorial.enl
- Choose Biosis Previews (OVID)
Part 5: Entering and Managing References
- Create a new record via keyboard
- Open the Tutorial Library
- From the References menu, click New Reference
- Reference type: Book
- Enter the following information:
- Author: Lo, Bernard
- Year: 2000
- Title: Resolving ethical dilemmas: a guide for clinicians
- City: Philadelphia
- Publisher: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
- Keywords: Ethics, Medical; Decision Making; Life Support Care; Physician-Patient Relations
- From the File menu, click Close Reference
- Search for a set of references
- From the References Menu, click Search References
- Enter Ethics as the first search term
- Click And
- Enter Dogs as the second search term
- Click Search
- Print the found references
- Select any style from the output style list on the main toolbar
- From the File Menu, click Print
- Click OK
- From the References Menu, click Show All References
Part 6: Using EndNote While Writing a Paper with Microsoft WORD
- Create a new manuscript and bibliography with cited EndNote references
- Type the following text:
Renal transplantation is now widely considered the preferred mode of renal replacement therapy. - From the Tools menu, click the EndNote 6 submenu, then Find Citation(s)
- In the EndNote Insert Citations dialog box:
- Type Gohh in the Find box
- Click Search
- Click Insert
- Add the following text:
The growing shortage of cadaver kidneys available for organ donation compared to the growing demand has led to an increase in the use of living unrelated donors for renal transplantation. - From the Tools menu, click EndNote 6 submenu, then Find Citation(s)
- In the EndNote Insert Citations dialog box:
- Type renal transplantation living unrelated donors in the Find box
- Click Search
- Highlight Samhan reference
- Click Insert
- Add the following text:
Some people have argued that we may harm the donors in the long run. The evidence, however, is clearly not so. - From the Tools menu, click EndNote 6 submenu, then Find Citation(s)
- In the EndNote Insert Citations dialog box:
- Type Daar 1999 in the Find box
- Click Search
- Click Insert
- From the File menu, Save As manuscript.doc
- Type the following text:
- Format the manuscript and bibliography
- From WORD's Tool menu, click the EndNote 6 submenu, then Format Bibliography
- In the EndNote Format Bibliography dialog box:
- Format document: manuscript.doc
- With output style: Annals Surgery
- Click OK
- Change the Bibliographic Style
- From WORD's Tool menu, click the EndNote 6 submenu, then Format Bibliography
- In the EndNote Format Bibliography dialog box:
- Format document: manuscript.doc
- With output style: Kidney Intl
- Click OK
