Reference Services

The Humanities & Social Sciences Department offers reference services, one-on-one consultations, and customized bibliographic instruction for courses.

Desk Reference
Specialized Humanities & Social Science desk reference service is available at our reference desk on the second floor of Shields Library from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday.
See the University Library Reference Page for information on extended evening and weekend reference.
Electronic Reference
Subject librarians welcome telephone or e-mail queries, and will respond as promptly as possible. If you have a question of a general nature, you may direct your question to hssref@lib.ucdavis.edu or call the second floor Reference Desk at (530) 752‑9862.
Consultations
Paper-Aid - One-on-one research support for undergraduates in the Humanities & Social Sciences. Forms for making an appointment are available at the H/SS Reference Desk on the second floor of the library
Customized Biblographic Instruction
Subject librarians will work with course instructors of upper-level or graduate courses with a research component to design a library instructional session based on the specific topics students are exploring. It is helpful to contact the librarian directly and well before the date you wish to schedule the class. This will allow us to schedule our library instructional lab and to research the sources your students will be using.
The Library Instruction Services offers more general instruction courses covering use of EndNote and basic catalog/database searching.
