How to Access the Collection

The Harrison Western Research Center is administered by the Department of Special Collections at the General Library at the University of California, Davis. It is a non-circulating collection under Special Collections Reading Room rules that are designed to protect the rare and unique materials.

Locating Books in the Michael and Margaret B. Harrison Western Research Center.

The cataloged books in the Harrison collection will appear in the Library's Harvest Library Catalog. Searching western topics, titles, and authors may lead you to books in the Harrison collection. Example:

Some books will be available in both the University Library's General Collection and the Harrison Collection (see Item #1 below). The location of these books (see Library/Call no. column) will be listed as "Shields Library [Call #] Regular Loan" and as "Shields Special Collections Harrison Collection [Call#] Library Use Only." The researcher should use the circulating copy whenever possible, as this book will be available for check out.

Searching Harrison Collection Books Only

To limit your search for Harrison Collection material only, use the Michael and Margaret B. Harrison Western Research Center heading that has been attached to each catalogued book in the Harrison collection.

First select Advanced Search from the "Search Options" bar.

Select Author–Corporate from the "Field to Search" drop down menu and type Michael and Margaret B. Harrison Western Research Center. In the next box type your title, subject, or keyword interest. Then click on the "Search" button.

Search results will be generated for each of the fields that you filled out, plus the total number of items that contain all terms that you have entered. Click the bottom (Total) number in the "# Results" column to see a list of your results.
