Connect From Off-Campus

Connect from Off Campus (http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/ul/services/connect/)
Instructions for UC Davis students, faculty, and employees to access our licensed resources from off campus. VPN is the preferred method for remote access in most cases.

  • VPN Client Installation links (http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/ul/services/connect/vpn/) [Restricted] VPN
PubMed and multiple browser tab/window users: the new VPN client works best for you. Please see the Install guides listed from this link. Other reasons to install the VPN Client are when you: often connect to PDFs which have URL links; want to use the "Find Full Text" feature in EndNote; use MyNCBI in PubMed; rely on licensed resources not accessible via the Web VPN; prefer uninterrupted access to licensed resources from your own computer; prefer operating system (OS)-level rather than browser-level access to licensed resources

Library Catalogs

There are three major subject heading approaches to finding career information. There are general subject headings you can BROWSE such as "career choice" or "Vocational guidance" which pick up general interdisciplinary resources. You may also BROWSE by a discipline and add the subheading "vocational guidance" e.g. agriculture -- vocational guidance ; ecology -- vocational guidance ; environmental sciences -- vocational guidance ; medicine -- vocational guidance ; veterinary medicine -- vocational guidance
Harvest UC Davis Catalog (http://harvest.lib.ucdavis.edu)
Harvest is the UCD library online catalog of the collections of all five UC Davis General Libraries. It does not include the holdings of the Law Library. If you log in (My Account) using your library card number and PIN, you can renew books online, and request items that have been checked out to another borrower, or are in storage.

Use the Subject Guides to identify additional databases to search for information on your topic.

Databases, General

The Academic Search Complete database indexes magazines, a great source for general articles about careers in different fields. Web of Science indexes nearly exclusively peer-reviewed journals but many may be published by professional societies or associations.
Academic Search Complete [via EBSCO] (http://uclibs.org/PID/126936) [Restricted] VPN
Academic Search Complete (ASC) provides coverage of multidisciplinary, full-text academic journals to support scholarly research in all areas of the arts, humanities and the social, life and physical sciences. The database includes the full-text articles from 9,100 journals, with an additional 13,690 journals indexed and abstracted. Searches can be restricted to peer-reviewed articles.

UC-eLinks

UC-eLinks (http://www.cdlib.org/services/info_services/instruct/ucelinks_guide.html)
UC-eLinks appears in most of our online citation databases and provides a consistent way of getting to full-text articles or information about which issues of a journal we own. If we do not own a journal, you can use the UC-eLinks service to Request that the article be sent to you.

Databases, Subject Specific

All professions have international, national, state and often local societies or organizations which support the goals and professional educational needs of their members, for example the American Fisheries Society, the American Phytopathological Society, the Ecological Society of America. These societies or associations will often have their own publications with many of these societies publishing both research/scholarly journals and their own society magazine and/or newsletters. Their magazine and/or newsletter is a great resource for current issues in the profession, and articles about the state of the profession, what new careers are evolving in their profession, as well as a source of position advertisements.
Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management (ESPM) [via ProQuest] (http://www.csa.com/htbin/dbrng.cgi?username=davis&access=davis856&db=envclust-set-c&db=eisft-set-c&adv=1) [Restricted] VPN
Major areas of coverage include aquatic pollution, bacteriology, ecology, energy resources, environmental biotechnology & engineering, environmental impact statements, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, microbiology, and risk assessment. Separately searchable subfiles include: ASFA 3: Aquatic Pollution and Environmental Quality; Bacteriology Abstracts (Microbiology B); Ecology Abstracts; Environmental Engineering Abstracts; Health and Safety Science Abstracts; Industrial and Applied Microbiology Abstracts (Microbiology A); Pollution Abstracts; Risk Abstracts; Sustainability Science Abstracts; Toxicology Abstracts; and Water Resources Abstracts. EIS: Full Text and Digests of Environmental Impact Statements are combined for cross-searching with ESPM.

Journal Ranking

Exploring which journals are most important in various disciplines? Use Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports which is a comprehensive tool for assessing the importance of research journals in disciplines and subdisciplines including medical specialties. NOTE that review journals tend to be listed as top ranked titles, taking space away from original research titles, so use with caution.
Journal Citation Reports (JCR) (http://uclibs.org/PID/36787) [Restricted] VPN

Journal Citation Reports is an annual publication by Thomson Reuters with each yearly data analysis being completed in the following year. The most recent edition is always published in the summer following the year analyzed.

Journal Citation Reports indicates the most frequently cited journals in a field, the highest impact journals in a field, and the largest journals in a field. JCR Science Edition contains data from over 7,300 journals in science and technology. JCR Social Sciences Edition contains data from over 2,200 journals in the social sciences. NOTE: For disciplines that have longer timespans for citation, consider sorting for ranking by using the 5-year Impact Factor sort.
